My son jack is 3.5 years old and he likes flowers but he has got very bad habit of plucking the flowers from its plant. And after plucking he will not keep it properly actually he just plucks each petal and throws it away. Similarly he even plucks the leaves from the plant.
I have been trying to make him realize that its not a good thing to do. And God has created so beautiful things why destroy them. Enjoy the beauty but he is adamant and now I have even stopped him from going in the balcony where I keep my plants.
These things cannot be taught. You just have to keep setting an example. If you take care of plants in your day to day life then your kid will follow the same. You cannot make him do so just by asking him to do.
First of all you have to let your kid love himself and you. That means let him know what love is and how he should take care of loved ones. Once he understands love he will definitely love his toys and slowly other things.
By plucking the flowers and its petals maybe your child is trying to explore things. Its just that you need to make him feel how flowers look good on the plants and also you need to explain to him how he ends up destroying the beauty of the flower by plucking away its petal.
If you take care of plants and show your love for them your child be do the same.
I have been involving my kids in gardening since the time they were very young.
Just looking at the plants will not help your child. Involve him in your gardening. From the time you put soil in a pot and then to putting in plants. Let him be involved in the day to day care of the plant. If he interacts with this world daily he will she the bud and the flower coming on the plant. Observing this whole life cycle with him playing a part in the growth he will never be destructive again.
If you love nature then naturally you can develop the same in your child. Just let them play outside in park and garden. Let them feel the nature, like picking up the leaves flowers etc. Show them the different trees, flowers, insects etc., tell them the names and special features. How they are different from us. This will help them love the nature.
A simple thing that will help is interaction with the nature. What I mean is the more the child comes in touch with plants and animals the more he will love it. Take your child to some farm and gardens where he can see plants with different kinds of flowers and trees with various kinds of fruits and vegetable. This way he will realize the value of plants and tree.
