Can you please help on how to get my child learn hindi. The fact that i started on hindi late has hurt him. we are in south india. but we are basically from north. In schools he was not pushed as much for hindi. and he got limited exposure. Now whenever we ask him to sit with hindi book or give him hindi exercises, he says no. Instead he says that he will study english or maths. i am lost how to get him interested.
Do not put pressure on him. I am not sure what language you use at home. If not Hindi better go ahead and start talking to your child in Hindi that will surely get him interested in the language. One definitely has an inclination towards the language that we use in our verbal communications.
Hope this helps.
Once your kid learns the Hindi letters I feel its much easier to learn hindi as it is simple. Each letter has one single pronunciation not like English where same letter may sound different at different places and somewhere though the letter is present in the spelling it becomes silent.

Have fun.
Learning any language is difficult in the beginning but still kids can lean it much faster than adults. I feel that just a proper start is needed. I think you need to find a funway for your child. Maybe get some flashcards for the letters and the things that start with that letter. And play a game with your child. In this way think of some other games as well. I am sure your child will get interested.
Hope this helps.
thank you for your response carebaby. i do not put pressure on my child for any learning. In fact people say that I am too lenient. Since last month, i have started talking to my child in hindi. And my husband talks in other language. I was wondering if I can do anything more to encourage him to learn a new language.
Have fun.
i thought the same. He recognizes almost all the letters. But still he does not like to open Hindi books. I think he can read hindi better if he tries. But still he says that no hindi. He is happy to sit with english books even though he cannot read much. I am thinking is there a way to improve his interest level in hindi similar to that in english.
i have not done such things. i thought the best way to learn will be to use it in everyday life. Maybe introducing some games would make him try without being too stressed. let me try this with hope that it helps in some way.
thank you.
any language learning comes by practice. you let them mingle with other kids who speak hindi. when they play together, he will have no option but to speak in hindi. and kids are good at picking up another language in this situation. i have seen one child who learnt tamil even though he was from north while playing with his local friends.
On Tata Sky you can play many serials in hindi. I think your child will like watching serials. You can also buy such CD or DVDs in hindi. Like chhota bheem, Ben 10, etc. I am sure he will like one of them. Usually children like to repeat some of the dialogues of their favourite character.
Get a cd of hindi rhymes. I still remember when my child started singling the rhyme "aha tamatar bada majedaar..". some of the hindi rhymes are really cute. children love it. pick one with easy words and something that they can relate to. like fruits and vegetables.
hi Samay,
My feeling is that you do not use hindi while speaking to your spouse. The best way to help a child teach a language is not only to make her practice but also to expose to appropriate language. While CDs and TVs can do that. but they can only be enactment. there is nothing like exposing him to real hindi conversation, which you can do by speaking to your spouse in hindi. i am sure he will pick some from your conversations. like if yous spouse ask you for dinner in hindi. I am sure your son will do once a while the same since those are the words that will come to his mind. It is easy to unlearn and learn new things for children.
