How do I know if my child is ready for potty training?

My son is going to be 2.5 years old now. Am wondering if its the right time to start potty training now. I do not want to put stress on him. I would love to know when you moms started potty training for your kid.
How do I know if he is ready for potty training?
I started potty training for my son when he was 19 months old. By that time he was having regular and soft bowel so I thought it was the right time to do so.
And he picked up within 6 months time, though a real difficult job
I started potty training for my daughter once she was able to express in words that she wanted to go for urine or bowel.
I started training my kids once they could sit. I think its just that you should have patience and the right way and you can potty train your kid at an early age.
Hey I started potty training for my son as he did not like dirty or wet nappy at all. He was very irritated whenever he was in a dirty nappy. So, I started his potty training when he was about 14 months old. And now that he is more that 30 months old he is using potty regularly.
I potty trained both my kids once they started sitting but I have seen kids who are not comfortable at such an early age so I would say it totally depends on the child when he is comfortable and ready.
