My daughter is 3+ years and till now we have mainly talked to her in English as we thought she should get a better hold of it. Now we are thinking of introducing our native language, Telugu to her. I am just wondering if this will be the right time to introduce a new language to her.

I think kids of 3yrs can safely handle two languages. People often underestimate the true potential of children, but I have often seen kids knowing even three languages when the two parents have different native languages.

According to me its a very wrong thinking that your kid will get confused if you talk to him in 2 languages. If you make them used to 2 languages from the very beginning they can very well understand both and actually they will easily converse in both. I have been using both English and Hindi with my daughter since she was born and she has very well picked up both the languages.
dikoy, so better introduce your kid to the 2nd language now itself.

dikoy, its high time to introduce your daughter to a 2nd language. We adults underestimate children. Actually we should start introducing 2nd language to children at the age when they are learning to speak. Children have strong language acquisition skill and they can pick up more than one language at a time.

Start now and begin with words and phrases and then move on to sentences.
May be you can set specific time and activities when you just use the second language.

All the best to you and your daughter.
Have fun

My daughter speaks 2 languages and understand a third Smile. We introduced her to 2 languages since the day she was born. I mean we were talking to her although she might not have understood what we were speaking Smile. Later she herself started understanding a third language which was spoken at home. So I think it's never too early to introduce your kid to a 2nd language.
