My son is now 4 and half years. he does not yet read even words. but i have recently started teaching him to read simple stuff like 3-letter words. cat, mat, bat, etc.
I was thinking that I am pushing too much since he goes to a school, which is famous for academic, but even there, they are not teaching him to read.
somewhere i was reading about reading habit of children and there i came across parents whose children have been reading 50 page books by this time. Is this normal. Because there were at least 10 parents discussing about their children of around similar age and various stage of reading ability. And most were of the opinion that by class-1 kids should almost be reading novels. Is this correct expectation? Do I need to do more to help my child read?

I think that its good that you have started teaching words reading to your child. This is the right age for that but definitely it will right to say wow for a child who can read book at this age.

My son who is 4 and I have also started with teaching him to read simple words.

At 4 years of age your child should be able to read simple sentences with 2-3 simple words. For this you got to get your child into reading and listening to stories from the very beginning.

At 4 years of age your child is in PPI and at this stage most of the schools in India do start teaching the kids how to read. My the end of PPI my child started reading simple sentences like "cat sat on bed. " etc. etc.
I bought books which had simple 3-4 line stories and my kids could read it by the time they were 4 years 6 months old.

I cannot say about the minimum age but my son started reading simple words and sentences at the end of PP I. But there were kids in his class at that time who were much more fluent than him.
