i think these days there is no limit on what you can spend on children. i have heard numbers that are incredible.
so i thought i should ask you all on what is the average that you spend on one child.

i am not sure if there would be one number that you can relate to. it depends on too many factors.
if one lives in join family then there could be many maids or no maid at home. how will you take into account of the cost of maid in either case?

this will also depend on city that you live in. based on my understanding mumbai, delhi and bangalore may be expensive compared to hyderabad, chennai, kolkata or pune.
there are some exppenses that are common for everyone like food. what you may measure is education related expenses, medical expenses, clothings for children, etc.

you are right. it will be different for everyone. i think my brother spends more than 20 thousands every month on his son. he is 5 years now. 10 thousands or so on school fees. then few thousands on extra curricular stuff. i don't think everyone can do that.

I don't think this can be put in numbers. It totally depends on what are your limitations. There are several expenditures like education, health, food, clothing etc. etc. Now with the International school in town its really difficult to say whats the limit to fees in school. Apart from that one can definitely spend on extra curricular.
For health I am sure none of the parents will compromise and now its become very expensive in India as well.

Fooding and clothing is totally dependent on you. I am sure you would like to give healthy food to your kids but whats the limit to it.

So, on the whole its very specific to a family how much they spend on their kids.

Here is the rough average monthly expense for my 12 years old daughter
School (including conveyance): 5000
Extra curricular Trainings(dance, Music, sports) : 2000
Medical : 2000
Clothing : 2000

Apart from this food and some miscellaneous expenses are also there.

I came across a very good article on the rising expenses on education. I think education is a big chunk of expenditure on a child. My son has just started going to play school and I can feel the expense.

My son is going to Nursery and as of now I am spending 3K per month on school(excluding conveyance). I keep having a hefty medical bill every now and then which may be average of 2.5K. Apart from this I am taking my son for singing and swimming classes with an expense of 1.8K.

Now some normal expenses of special food, clothing and some outings are there for which its difficult to put numbers.

My son is 1 year old and now I do not have any education expenses still I feel the expenses have increased a lot after he is born. I have never really calculated how much I spent on him but still my total monthly expenses have gone up by almost 8000.
