Gift for a newborn and the new parents

My friend had her first child some days back. She is now throwing a party next week. I am not sure what my husband and me can gift the new parents. We would like the the gift to be something useful and unique 
. Any ideas?

A friend of mine gave it to us on my baby's Birth and I can tell you my baby loves it.
Play Gym. I am suggesting this because I have seen my baby enjoying it to the fullest. Once I used to put her in it I can do my work she will be busy playing.

If your friend is very close then you can gift an Album of first moments of their baby as soon as he/she was born. Along with foot and hand prints.
Good gift for a newborn is a diapers.. Its very useful and funny too. This is really thoughtful gift, since babies go through a lot ..
nothing better than gift coupon. let the parents decide what they need most. I am sure most of you have been through situation where you have 20 collected puzzles, 10 tiffin boxes, 10 pencil boxes and so on. Now you can see how they will feel even if you give them an expensive gift.
