First a late good news from my side. I am blessed with a baby boy on 10th Oct 2010. Now he is 2 months old and I want to take full care of him. Now with the approaching winter mil suggesting me to sit with the baby in sun. She says that sun rays would be good for the baby and he will keep warm as well.
Just wondering if keeping my baby in direct sun for a couple of hours is good?
sun rays are always good. But I would suggest do not sit in direct sunlight, better would be sitting in some place where partial sunlight is coming. I do keep my child in son for a couple of hours during winter.
Definitely sun rays are good for babies. Just that the baby's complexion may darken for sometime but it will be back to normal once you stopping sitting with him in sun.
I did so when my first child was a baby and mostly have seen Indian families doing so.
I do not think sitting in direct sun is good for a baby for long duration. But optimum exposure to sun is good for everyone. A little of sunshine will definitely be good for you but always make sure not to expose your baby in excess to sunrays.
Sun light is very important for formation of Vitamin D in body. So, its very important to expose our babies to sun for some duration. In an American magazine I came across an article that said that about 5 minutes of sun exposure each day is required for a baby without any clothes and with clothes about 20 minutes of sun exposure is required each day. And for babies with darker skin, sun exposure requirement may be a little more.
