when should i leave children at home?

i have a 11 year boy and another 7 year girl. they have got busy schedule of their own.
still i try to accompany them as long as i can when i am at home. for past few months i have not been able to do that for some reason.
that really troubles me.
so i am asking other mothers. how do you manage? do you really care about not leaving kids alone at home without any parent being present? if yes then how long do you leave them for?
i personally don't leave them for more than 2 hrs. that too when i have to go outside where i have to do lot of running around.
but i also know of people who leave them with their maid for entire day.
My daughter is just 3 yrs old so I never leave her alone at home but according to my opinion even for elder kids its not advisable to leave them alone for more than a couple of hours.

and if i take her with me then i will never be able to get anything done. so yes. i am one of the mothers who leave kids at home.
