how many days will a birth control pill be effective?

hi,
i am thinking of using birth control pills. But i am not sure how expensive will be using pill.
please answer some of my questions?

birth control pills need to be taken regularly. Its does not work like you take a pill and it has effect for few days. Mostly pills come in a set of 21 or 28 and that is for one cycle. So, you have to keep taking these pills as long as you do not want a baby. Once you plan to have a baby you stop these pills and once your periods are regularised you can try for a baby.
In a cycle even if you miss pills it could be that you get pregnant if you don't use any other method. So, you have to very regular with your birth control pills.

i was under the impression that i just have to take one or two during every menst. cycle.

Birth control pills mainly contains hormones that changes the way a woman's ovary and uterus works. Most of the birth control pills prevents the release of eggs and thus if there is no egg pregnancy cannot occur.
And as specified by masti these pills come in a set and should be taken daily. Definitely it should be taken daily and the hormones should prevent eggs release daily.
Birth control pills have to be taken regularly on daily basis. I am not aware of any pills which can be taken less frequently. May be other members have some idea.

someone might have told bb856 about taking pills for short term. that is certainly possible. in case you only need to control it for 5 days. then you don't need to take the pill for entire month.

From what I know even if one wants to control for 5 days one has to take these pills for a month or two. Otherwise may be use other contraceptives.

there are various options. our very own mala-D is a name that most of us have heard.
don't go by the tv or newspaper advertisements. consult doctor before you decide on one.
mama-D is still available but lot has changed from mala-D days.
all the contraceptive pills contain two hormones estrogen and progesterone. they help prevent ovulation, whichc is key to controlling birth. there are pills available from various name brands. each of them have different combination of two harmones estrogen and progestin.
it is said that higher level of estrogen can have side effects. therefore recently new type of pills have come in the market. i do not know much about that.
