is facebook and orkut safe for teens?

these days every teens want to be on orkut and facebook. how safe are they for children.
i think there is guidelines that you can not signup unless you are of 18 years and above. if they can buy cigarettes then who can stop them from signing up to these sites.
while thinking of putting any stop i was thinking of whether we need to do this.
i don't think there is any issue with facebook. i think the earlier they get familiar with what exists around them the better it is. at least when they are young we can influence their thought process and make them think what is right and what is wrong.
if we don't tell them now then they will anyway explore later. and that time they will do what they want to do. they are not going to ask you or even share with you about everything that they do over there.
I think that one should expose our kids to the world but under supervision. Otherwise if you restrict them they will be attracted towards that thing much more. Thats a human nature so its better that we as parents let them know about things then thay will take it as normal and nothing extraordinary.
