Postpartum bleeding does continue upto 6 weeks for many women but if you are having bleeding beyond 6 weeks it would be advisable to consult your doctor.

Bleeding just after delivery is known as Lochia. In beginning Lochia is bright red in color and is like heavy menstrual period. The discharge will decrease day by day and by a week lochia will be watery and pinkish in color. After this mostly it takes upto four weeks to go. For some women though lochia may last for another couple of weeks.

Mostly the flow is heavy in the first couple of weeks and it should decrease slowly. You may have some spotting for about 3 months after pregnancy. But if the flow is heavy beyond 6 weeks then its a matter of concern.

6 weeks is normal and anything beyond that is not something which happens. cottageblake, 3 weeks is very normal I will suggest you to wait upto 6 weeks. And one thing is there the amount of bleeding should decrease slowly.

In addition if the flow is abnomal i.e. heavy or big blood clots then it could be a sign of late postpartum hemorrhage and needs attention.
Some other things to be careful about are : any foul smell or the color is bright red in color a week after delivery consult the doctor.

All your comments have really been helpful in understanding that its very normal to bleed upto 6 weeks after pregnancy. My bleeding has reduced to a great extent. Thanks for all your help. Will be looking forward to more support in raising my child.

I haven't thought about writing anything on the Third Period, I would be interested, but I wouldn't really know where to begin.
