cervical cerclage: how safe and proven?

Hello all,
Does anyone know about cervical cerclage? I heard it for the first time yesterday. Unfortunately I have to go through it.I wish no one has the need to know this. Doctors have told me to have this operation done in order to ensure safe birth of my child. Based on what I could understand it is about stitching cervix since it is very weak and there there are chances of very very early premature baby. doctor is saying that I have to do it soon otherwise the risk will increase. i am in 16th weeks now.
please tell me how safe is it? Is there an alternative to this surgery?

Cervical cerclage requires a operation to prevent miscarriage or premature birth. This mainly involves the closure of the opening of uterus. Though I have not gone through it personally a year back a close friend of mine had to go for it. After the stitches were put she was put for bed rest as well. But thankfully with all the precautions she had a healthy full term baby.
So, I will suggest you to listen to your doctor and go ahead with the surgery.

it was relieving to hear from you. What are the possible risks of operation? what is usual success rate in this operation? i know i am asking too many questions. but i am little worried and these questions just come to my mind.
Recently a neighbor of mine had this operation and she was mentioning that still she has to be very overcautious as there are chances of premature labor and infection to the cervix also cannot ignored. Doctor has advised her to rest as much.
