One of my friends who is expecting her 1st baby any time now came to know in the 37th week of pregnancy that her blood sugar is quite high. She was tested in the 23rd week for sugar and everything was fine. She is not quite sure how suddenly her sugar went up. How dangerous is this sudden discovery? Have any of you experienced the same?
Not healthy at all.
Baby can have health related issue due to possible birth defects. Some of the problems that i can remember are breathing related and also jaundice.
Please ask your friend to get herself checked and start taking medicine at the earliest. Of course based on what the doctor recommends.
In my knowledge birth defects mostly originates in the first trimester and if your friend's sugar level has gone up later birth defect may not occur. But yes there are chances of baby being oversized or baby having very low blood sugar just after birth.
But all this can be prevented if your friend keeps control on the sugar level with doctor's treatments.
Gestation Diabetes can get your baby in trouble if you do not control the sugar level. Best way is to be in doctor's guidance and keep monitoring your sugar level.
Mostly a regular check is done for sugar level. Most of the time one's sugar level increases only towards the last trimester of pregnancy and if not kept in check can be harmful for the mom and the baby.
If one has the history of Diabetes in family then doctors are generally alert from the very beginning.
