Avoid any spicy food and drink a lot of water. This will help to some extent.
eating habbit is also very important.
eat more frequently and less food in single meal.
also do not goto bed immediately after your dinner. sit or walk for sometime before going for sleep.

i always prefer prevention. and you suggested some really good measures. we should follow them in our normal lifestyle. pregnant or no pregnant.
some exercise also helps. slow walking is what everyone can do. of course, don't stress or stretch yourself..

Something that I would like to add are:
-- Chew your food nicely when you eat.
-- Take less liquid like water or juice during meals
-- Always be in a sitting position while you are eating.
Try to find out which food is causing the problem. Sometimes some specific food item is the cause. If you are able to identify the food item then you can avoid that food during your entire pregnancy.
Some of the food items which may cause gastric problems are Cauliflower, Onions, Apples and Pears.
I had severe gas problem in my first trimester and some part of second trimester. And my doctor gave me Alcaine Syrup. Though that did not help much. In the second trimester that too was stopped.
What helped me most eating never eating full stomach, eating at small intervals and exercise. Though it was gone slowly with time.
Ajwain water helped me when I was pregnant. You can give it a try.
