I am into the third trimester of pregnancy and we are redoing our house so the whole house needs to be painted. Someone suggested that I should not get it done now. Will getting the house painted harm me in some way?
Its best to stay away from paints during pregnancy. Paints do contain many chemicals and its not even known what substances may be absorbed by the body causing some risks for the baby.
If its really important to get the house painted you try to stay away from the area. Maybe stay with your parents for the time being. Lets other family members handle this.
It depends on the type of paint being used. Lead based paint is the most harmful. Avoid being around while scraping of the paint as you may inhale the lead dust which can have adverse effect on you and your baby. There are chances of your baby having some birth defects due to this.
The risks are definitely very low if you are just getting some painting done at your home but in such a important phase of life why take such a chance. You can definitely leave these painting work to be done after the arrival of your baby.
If you really need to get the painting done and you need to be there get the non toxic paint and make sure that the area is well ventilated. I did get my house painted during my second pregnancy and everything did go well. My child is also healthy.
Thanks for all the info.
I think the paints are harmful.
liveink. you have given a very good idea to visit my parents I am also thinking of doing that.
Does anyone know of any such case where a baby was harmed due to exposure to paints.
In my previous house I had a maid who's husband is a painter and she used to assist him in her free time. During her pregnancy she continued helping him out. Infact they were working hard together to earn more money for their baby on his arrival. But it was so sad that she had miscarriage in the 6th month, if I remember right.
Many people said it was because of exposure to paints. I am not sure what was the reason but yes she was exposed a lot to paints of all kinds.

It is definitely due to paints. I have also come across cases in which doctors have warned ladies to keep herself away from paint fumes.
Mostly its better not to be exposed to chemicals for long as it may lead to some problem for the baby or the mom. So, why take a chance, avoid if you can.
