Does induced labor has some risk associated

These days I have hearing a lot of cases where labor is being induced and with my due date approaching I am getting several different thoughts on what may happen during delivery.
I was thinking if I have to opt for induced labor should I do so? Does it have any risk for the mom or baby.
Thanks in advance for the inputs.

In most cases labor induction does not have any severe problem but if the induction does not work you will have to go for C-section which can be more complicated than a C-section that is planned. There is a less chance of this as am sure the doctor would recommend labor induction only if required.

The risk varies depending on the method used. If Prostaglandin is used then there is a risk of uterus getting overstimulated or hyperstimulated. Hyperstimulation in turn can reduce the oxygen supply to the baby. Sometimes hyperstimulation can even cause the uterus to rupture.

Though chances are less but I think one should be aware of these risks before opting for induced labor.

A cousin of mine had to go to induced labor because of unavoidable circumstances. But even after she was in labor, baby's birth had to be assisted with forceps as the baby was not in proper position. On discussion with the doctor we came to know that many a times baby's birth has to be assisted in case of induced labor.

I have heard that contractions are more forceful than natural labor, which can cause the baby to stay/assume in unfavorable position making the labour longer and painful for the mother.

I had to go for induced labor on doctor's recommendation but ultimately had to go for C-section. Thankfully did not face any other problem.

Thanks ladies your inputs have been really helpful. It clears my mind that I should not be opting for induction until and unless there is an adverse situation and have no other option is there.

If induction is done before the body is ready an induction might fail and one may have to go for C-Section.

If in the process the amniotic sac ruptures another method of induction may be needed as ruptured amniotic sac can lead to infection in both mom and baby.
