What is childbirth education?

Hi Ladies,
I have heard that there are some 'childbirth education classes' offered abroad. I want to know about them and whether they are helpful. A friend of mine in UK said she took these classes and it helped her prepare for delivery, but I am no longer in contact with her. Are these 'classes' offered in India?

Childbirth classes are held to help pregnant women prepare for labor and child birth, fitness & food, breastfeeding and baby care. These classes helps in reducing the fears about pain and delivery, by discussing with them all the queries emotional or medical with the instructor as well as other pregnant women. They get to share their feelings with women going through similar physical and emotional changes. In addition to the women their partners are also able to share their feelings and worriers with other fathers to be.

I got initial information about these classes from my sis-in-law living in US. THen I found out there are a few classes going in India also. There is a some Lamaze Child Birth classes which conducts classes in several cities.
Hey eva, thats a very useful piece of info for us. i didnt know such classes are held in India. Are such classes only for the 1st time moms?
I don't think that these classes are restricted for first time moms. Actually many places outside India its compulsory for you to attend such classes before delivery.
I attended one such class and I really found it useful and informative. I found answers to so many questions that were in my mind.
I was never aware of such classes. I think this is still not very popular in India. Good to know. This forum is very informative for me. Thanks.
