I am in the early stage of my pregnancy and today morning I was having honey when one of my relatives said that honey is not good for babies. Is it so?

I had honey throughout my pregnancy and did not have any problems due to that.

Its true that honey should not be given to infants below 1 year of age as there is some spores present which could be harmful. But for pregnant women it does not pose any problem as they have acid in their digestive system which will prevent the spores from growing thus preventing any harm to the baby you are going to have.

I am having honey during my pregnancy and I had some similar questions but my doctor said its perfectly fine for a pregnant woman to have honey.

Here is some useful info I found on a the site "iVillage"

"A pregnant mom can safely eat honey. Her digestive tract is acidic, and will prevent a botulinum spore from growing -- no toxin will be produced. There is no danger to the fetus from the mom-to-be eating honey or honey-containing foods"

eva thats e real useful information. I also had the same question as honeybee at the start of my pregnancy and my cousin who is a doctor told me something similar to what you have said.

I am breastfeeding, should I be avoiding honey as its harmful for kids below 1year as pointed out by kokila?

  • missymiss

sushma30, you can eat honey it not at all a problem. When you eat honey it goes through your digestive system so spores are destroyed and they will not get into your bloodstream.

Thanks a lot for all your inputs.
I guess now I can enjoy honey.
