Best Double Stroller for Infant and Toddler
The Votes Are In!
“Our Moms Unanimously Voted This The Best Double Stroller for Infant and Toddler on the Internet!”
It’s always a little embarrassing to be wrong, especially in public.
Even though we don’t sell baby equipment ourselves, we consider ourselves experts on strollers and other baby products, enough to name what we think are the very best baby products on the internet.
It’s hard to admit that we were wrong about the best double stroller for infant and toddler. Not only were we wrong, but the right stroller is almost half the price of our choice. The only thing worse than being wrong is being wrong at twice the price!
So that we’re not too embarrassed, we have to say that our old pick for the best of the best double strollers has been considered Europe’s finest for years and has been coveted by Moms in the US for a long time.
More Expensive Does NOT Mean Better!
For the last couple of years, we’ve considered the Peg Perego Duette to be the ultimate in double strollers. It certainly is the Cadillac of double strollers and we’ve always justified the $800 price tag by pointing out the durability, beautiful design and quality construction.
However, we had so many Moms tell us that there was another double stroller for infant and toddler on the market that beat the Peg Perego hands down for maneuverability, was much, much lighter and easier to handle, had a much smoother ride, featured way more convenient touches and…..was almost half the price of the Peg Perego!
These are What Make a Double Stroller for Infant and Toddler the “Best”
Before we tell you which double stroller proved us so wrong, you should know what’s at the top of our priority list when evaluating a double stroller.
Keeping these two points in mind will not only keep you from buying the wrong double stroller, but it’ll also help you understand why our Moms were so insistent that their stroller was even better than the famous $800 European model.
- First, your double stroller has to be light enough for you to actually use it! A double stroller is generally quite heavy and can be really difficult to carry or to get in and out of your car or public transportation. Moms of multiple children have often considered that a trade-off for getting a two-seater. However, if you have a double stroller that is too heavy to carry comfortably or to move around, you won’t get your money’s worth out of it-simply because you won’t use it as often as you would like.
- Second, double strollers require a better suspension and better wheel design than a single stroller. Because you’ll have the weight of two children in your stroller, rather than one, cheap suspensions and poorly designed tires and wheels will make even the prettiest stroller a waste of money. If the kids are uncomfortable riding and uneven surfaces keep you from enjoying the park or certain neighborhood sidewalks, your stroller is doing you no good at all.
One of the main reasons that our Moms were so sure we should look into their double stroller of choice was that it met these two criteria like crazy. Over and over, we heard about the smooth ride, incredible suspension system and lightweight design of this stroller. Once we checked it out ourselves, we understood why they insisted that the real best double stroller for infant and toddler was half the price of our favorite.
We have been a little embarrassed to be wrong, but we were more than happy to admit we were. This really is the best double stroller for infants and toddlers available.
So Which Stroller Really is the Best?
It’s the Baby Jogger City Mini Double Stroller and we’re in love with it. The Baby Jogger City Mini Double Stroller is beautifully built, provides a much better ride, is easier to operate and has far more extra features than the Peg Perego, but costs almost $400 less!
The Best Stroller is Half the Weight AND Half the Price!!
We’ve always thought that the weight of the Peg Perego, at 70 very hefty pounds, was justified by its quality steel frame. However, the Baby Jogger City Mini has steel frame construction that is just as durable and safe as the Peg Perego, yet it only weighs 27 pounds!
The Baby Jogger City Mini won a PTPA Media Award for its high-quality design and construction. At 27 pounds, the Baby Jogger City Mini is much easier to carry or load and unload from a vehicle than many other double strollers and beats the Peg Perego hands down for ease of transport.
Extremely Easy to Fold and Carry!
Another drawback to the Peg Perego is that it does not offer one-handed folding. In fact, it doesn’t fold at all with the seats attached. You must remove the seats first. We always balanced that out with the Peg Perego’s durability.
However, the Baby Jogger City Mini, with its equal quality of construction, offers one-handed folding, without removing the seats. Four safety straps (a wonderful added safety feature) need to be undone, then this double stroller folds with one hand, quickly and easily. This is a huge deal for any Mom, but especially so for Moms with more than one child.
This Stroller is Much More Maneuverable
The Peg Perego has always been a favorite for its smooth ride. As we said, it’s the stroller version of a Cadillac. However, it isn’t known for its agility. It can be very difficult to maneuver around tight corners and small spaces and even to back up. We justified this with the stroller’s very smooth ride.
However, once we tried out the Baby Jogger City Mini, we realized that you don’t have to sacrifice maneuverability for smooth riding at all.
Because it is designed like a jogging stroller, the Baby Jogger City Mini can turn on a dime, with a very small turn radius and full-swivel wheels that make tight spaces a non-issue.
Unlike the traditional parallel wheels, the Baby Jogger City Mini has two pairs of front wheels in the center, rather than on either side of the stroller. This is what allows you to turn, back up and swerve around things so easily.
It also makes the Baby Jogger City Mini much easier when it comes to curbs and steps, too. After cruising this around lower Manhattan for a day, we’re wondering why all double strollers aren’t made this way. Moms and kids would get out a lot more often if they were!
The Suspension and Smooth Ride of a Jogging Stroller
As we said, the Baby Jogger is extremely agile, but still provides the smooth ride that’s so important. This is because it’s designed like a jogging stroller. The larger tires provide smooth sailing over bumps, cracks and uneven surfaces, even when you’re moving at a fast pace. There’s no point in using a stroller that the kids hate to ride and you hate to push, right?
The suspension is designed to absorb the shock much better than the Peg Perego, as well. Traditional double strollers are designed strictly for smooth floors and sidewalks, while the Baby Jogger City Mini can handle bumpy terrain and changes in the surface far better, without jostling your little ones or making your arms and wrists ache.
How Much Should You Pay for The Stroller?
Prices stay pretty consistently between $399 and $430. We’ve always found the best price for it on Amazon.com, but it tends to sell out fast. If you see it in stock, you should probably grab it while it’s available, especially if they’re offering free shipping.
Many More Convenience Features
Another quibble that we did always have with the Peg Perego Duette was the lack of convenience features. At $800, there really should be drink cup holders and other accessories available to parents. Okay, at $800, it should push itself and do laundry, too.
The Baby Jogger City Mini has a wonderful Parent Console, sold separately for around $30 that attaches to the stroller handlebar. It has pockets for your cell phone, keys and wallet and an insulated cooler pocket that’s wonderful for a water bottle or juice boxes.
We love this feature because, with it, you could go out without dragging a purse along with you. Handling the stroller and two children is enough, especially if you use public transportation or need the storage area for diaper bags or groceries.
The Baby Jogger City Mini also has a detachable child tray that’s great for setting your kids up with small toys or a quick snack, with a drink cup holder for sippy cups or bottles. We think every stroller should have a child tray. It can really make the difference between taking a cranky baby back home and enjoying the day with a happy and occupied baby.
Really No Comparison Between the Two
We still think that our first choice is a high-quality stroller, partly because we’re supposed to be experts and we don’t like being wrong!
However, when you look at the superior maneuverability, equally safe and durable construction, extremely lightweight and convenient extras of the Baby Jogger City Mini Double Stroller for Infant and Toddler, then compare its $430 price tag to Peg Perego’s whopping $800, the contest is over. Our Moms were right; there really is no comparison between the two.
Now we understand
why celebrity Moms who can easily afford $800 opt for the baby Jogger City Mini instead! ——>
So, Did We Find Anything We DON’T Like?
To tell you the truth, not really. The only complaints we saw regularly on the internet were that the storage area can be hard to get to. We admit that you do have to undo one or two of the safety straps (takes just a second) to access the cargo space underneath the seats. However, we kind of like that. It makes it harder for stuff to fall out (a real pain) and for thieves to just snatch your bag or backpack out when your head is turned.
So Where Can You Get Double Stroller for Infant and Toddler for the Best Price?
We found the best prices to be on Amazon, but they don’t stay in stock very long, so when you see it, grab it! Amazon offers free shipping, too, which makes it an even sweeter deal!
Some information you might consider while evaluating strollers…
A double stroller for infant and toddler can make all the difference in the world for the mom of twins or of two small children of different ages. Getting around with one little one is hard enough, but having two small children, especially two infants presents a whole slew of logistical obstacles.
If you’re looking for the best double strollers available for you and your family, here are a few tips from our Moms Panel to help you. Our Moms Panel is simply a group of moms who have shared their experiences with baby equipment such as strollers and car seats so that other Moms can benefit from their experience. Here is some of their excellent advice on choosing the best double stroller for your family.
Flexibility, Flexibility. Flexibility
A double stroller is an investment that should last several years. The best double strollers offer a ton of flexibility, changing as your needs change and your children grow.
It’s very important to look at the ways that each stroller adapts to those stages.
The best double strollers are designed to safely and comfortably carry your children from infancy to elementary school age. To do this, they need to adapt to your growing children.
Look for strollers with fully adjustable seats that change individually with each child. Some allow you to place either seat in both the forward-facing and rear-facing positions and recline fully for tiny or napping children, too.
Some double strollers offer stadium seats in the rear, where the rear seat can be elevated somewhat. This is great for allowing your child in the rear seat to have better visibility.
Cargo Space is Key
Cargo or storage space is important in any stroller, but twice as important when you have two children. You may need space for an infant’s diaper bag and a child’s backpack, plus your purse and any other essentials.
The best double strollers take this into consideration in their design and offer ample room for everything a busy mom needs to have handy. Look for both under the seat storage and net storage behind the rear seat.
Keep an Eye on Quality
As with any stroller, be sure that the quality is the best you can afford. Some manufacturers skimp on quality with their double strollers. Be sure the frame is well-made and that the suspension and wheels will hold up to years of carrying two children hither and yon.
Don’t Sacrifice Convenience
Your new double stroller will only be as good as it is convenient to use.
Make sure that the stroller is easily folded, preferably offering one-handed folding. This can be a lifesaver for a mom who is holding one child by the hand and another on her hip. The stroller should lock once it’s folded and the double stroller for infant and toddler is one that will remain upright on its own once it’s folded up.
Pay attention to details such as canopy size and adjustability, drink cup holders for both you and the kids, clear windows in the canopies to check on the children, infant inserts for the tiniest babies and even attachments for an MP3 player. The more convenient it is for you to use your new double stroller, the more enjoyment you and the children will get from it.
Several of the Moms on our Moms Panel chose double strollers for their families and they have some great advice and experience to share to help you choose the best double stroller for your needs.
Whichever double stroller for infant and toddler you choose, the important thing to remember is that every family is different. The best double stroller is the one that suits your family’s specific needs and lifestyle. Good luck!
